Swiss Energy Dashboard now shows solar power forecasts
Bern, 31.10.2025 - The Energy Dashboard of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) now shows daily data on solar power production at regional level (districts) as well as a five-day forecast in hourly resolution. The basis for this is information on the total installed capacity of solar power systems in Switzerland. This provides electricity grid operators and the public with an important source of data that shows how much solar power is currently being produced in the various regions of the country and how production will change in fine temporal granularity over the course of the year and in the near future.
The new database was developed by the SFOE together with the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC).The total installed capacity of photovoltaic (PV) systems in Switzerland combines information from Pronovo, the FederalRegister of Buildings and Housing (RBD), 3D models from the Swiss buildings vector dataset and aerial images from Swisstopo. The latter are evaluated using an artificial intelligence-based approach to add unregistered PV systems to the Pronovo database. Meteorological data from Copernicus and MeteoSwiss, as well as regional growth factors, are used to calculate PV electricity production and its 5-day forecast. Using publicly available data, data science and AI, this approach generates an accurate and up-to-date picture of solar power production in Switzerland. The data is provided as open data.
The constantly growing, weather-dependent solar power production is making the operation of the power grids increasingly challenging, and due to inaccurate or missing current forecasts, for example over weekends or holidays, the costs of balancing energy for consumers are rising. The new data on PV production in the Energy Dashboard makes an important contribution to transparency, planning security, and optimization of the Swiss energy system for the national grid company, distribution system operators, energy suppliers, local authorities, and the general public.
